The Slovenian Philharmonic Contrabass Quartet was established as early as in 1999 under the auspices of the Slovenian Philharmonic. Over time, we have rejuvenated the ensemble somewhat and prepared a new programme, which includes various musical genres (both original compositions for contrabass quartet, as well as arrangements of well-known quartets for other ensembles). We are convinced that the programme will satisfy both more demanding listeners and those who like to listen to slightly more rhythmic sounds. We have been endeavouring for some time to present the contrabass as a solo instrument in the Slovenian music scene. With its excellent musicians, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra is paving a new way and exploring a new sound for this largest instrument in the string family. For some time now, contrabass instruction has been becoming more widespread in elementary music schools in Slovenia, something for which the musicians of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra can also proudly take credit. We are making every effort to present “this great big clumsy violin” not only as a tool for rhythmic accompaniment, but as an instrument with a pleasantly caressing bass tone.
