Gioachino Rossini: Stabat mater
Rossini, the 150th anniversary of whose death we mark in 2018, was a true musical superstar of his time. He took the brilliant, sonically effortless but technically extremely demanding musical language of his opera music and tempered it slightly to adapt it to this large work with a sacred character for four vocal soloists, mixed choir and orchestra. At the time of its creation, the Stabat Mater (The Sorrowful Mother Was Standing) met with a wave of enthusiasm. In this work, Rossini enthusiasts saw the composer’s triumph, while many composers and critics, among them the young Richard Wagner, viewed it as reflecting the decadence of the high artistic traditions of European sacred music.
Nevertheless, the Stabat Mater represents a masterpiece and is a serious test for all of the performers, especially the vocal soloists.
