European nations have an age-long tradition of folk and fairy tales, a treasury passed down over generations to while away the long winter nights and for simple enjoyment. Historic events, Christian and pre-Christian mythology, provide a rich source of stories that enthral young and old alike with their exotic motifs, often including supernatural phenomena, and inspire us with moral instruction.

The New Year’s concert includes musical settings of different texts – from Pushkin’s historical themes, a love story by Shakespeare, tales by the Grimm Brothers, to Greek myths and liturgical texts of the Orthodox Church. The common thread that links the stories from highly dissimilar cultural traditions is Russian classical music. Throughout the centuries Russian composers knew how to breathe new life into ancient stories  with their natural ingenuity and sparkling wit. Thus, it is not surprising that Russian music is perfectly suited to the holiday season, the time when fairy tales come alive – magical glimpses at the past and sparks of imagination. Resembling lights that adorn our homes and streets and dispel the darkness of long winter evenings. May our concert bring a warm glow of contentment to your festive season!
