This season’s Vocal Series will conclude with a concert of sacred music, mainly comprising musical settings of Latin liturgical texts from the Renaissance to the present day. Between the individual movements of Missa Rigensis by Latvian composer Uģis Prauliņš are interwoven compositions by two English masters of Renaissance polyphony, Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, as well as works by two contemporary composers, Vytautas Miškinis from Lithuania and Paweł Łukaszewski from Poland.

.

Prauliņš, who studied conducting, piano and music education, also worked as a keyboard player in the rock groups Salve and Vecās mājas. Missa Rigensis was written in 2002, and in 2008 was recorded by the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge led by the conductor of the present concert, Stephen Layton.

.

We are familiar with English conductor Stephen Layton primarily as an artist who performs contemporary repertoire. He has premiered and recorded many works by Arvo Pärt, Thomas Adès, John Taverner and Morten Lauridsen, as well as by Vytautas Miškinis and Paweł Łukaszewski.
