Sigvards Kļava is one of the most internationally recognised Latvian conductors. He is also a music teacher and producer, as well as being the artistic director of the Latvian Radio Choir, which he has led since 1992. Under his leadership, the choir has become a first-rate ensemble with an international reputation, and this year it will present a fraction of its extensive repertoire to the Slovenian audience. Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil is regarded as one of the composer’s best creations and is among the most beautiful works of Orthodox sacred music. It will be followed by a composition by Latvian composer and lecturer at the Latvian Music Academy, Ēriks Ešenvalds. Per Anders Hillborg is one of the leading Swedish composers, and his sonic study Mou:aa:yiy:oum for 16-voice choir is among the classic works of the contemporary minimalist style. The are two more minimalist compositions on the programme, by Estonian Arvo Pärt and Latvian Pēteris Vasks. The Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, which is probably the composer’s most frequently performed work, will provide a pleasant contrast.

The opening concert of the Vocal Series is a project of the European Network of Professional Chamber Choirs TENSO, supported by the EU Culture Programme.
