Wagner’s operas represent a special challenge for conductors. As well as being an important innovator in the field of opera music, decisively changing the course of the development of this musical-theatrical form, Richard Wagner was also a key figure in the field of conducting. He occupied himself with the theory and practice of orchestral conducting not only on the concert stage and in the theatre pit, but also in his book On Conducting (1869), which extensively upgraded the conducting tradition and technique that had previously been developed by Felix Mendelssohn and Hector Berlioz.

.

It therefore comes as no surprise that Wagner’s work has attracted the particular attention of British conductor James Judd, who on this occasion has prepared a selection of excerpts from Wagner operas. Judd is the artistic director of the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion, and since autumn 2016 has been the chief conductor of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in Korea. In the 2017/18 season, he is taking up the position of artistic director of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. Judd focuses on both orchestral and opera repertoire.

.

An important contribution to the convincing performances will certainly me made by Austrian soprano Brigitte Pinter, a world-renowned interpreter of Wagner roles, who was educated at New York’s Juilliard.
